Jan Wheaton, PhD

Psychologist

Philosophy and Areas of Expertise/Interest: It has been my privilege to work with a diverse group of people both in terms of demographic characteristics as well as presenting concerns.  I have worked with clients on a broad range of issues including depression, anxiety, relationship concerns, grief, existential/spiritual issues, trauma and abuse, and sexuality.  As a female therapist I have developed special interest and experience with matters that are frequently of concern to women such as body image, self-esteem, domestic violence, and fertility.

I believe that the most important therapeutic component is the relationship between myself and my client.  I focus on the common, or “nonspecific,” factors that lead to a strong and collaborative therapeutic alliance to work on the goals that we have identified together.  I want my clients to feel safe to explore in the atmosphere that I provide: a combination of warmth, genuineness, empathy, compassionate empowerment, respect, gentle challenge, and a touch of humor.

Professional background:  I completed my doctorate in psychology in 1984 at Iowa State University after completing a psychology internship at the University of Florida.  I was originally licensed in North Carolina in 1986 and have been licensed as a psychologist in Ohio since 1988.  I had a 31 year career in university counseling centers which was highlighted by serving as the training director at two different universities and directing the Counseling Center at Cleveland State University for five years.  I retired from university work in 2014 and now enjoy bringing the depth of my experience to half-time work in private practice at Horizons.

Current Practice: My part-time practice is limited to individual, adult clients.  I meet with most clients remotely via a secure telepsychology platform (Zoom).   I am available to schedule appointments on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday afternoons only.  Early evening appointments (5:00 or 5:30) on those days can sometimes be arranged.  To discuss scheduling an appointment, please contact me at 440-845-9011 (mailbox 109) or via email at wheatonhorizons@gmail.com. I will get back to you as soon as I am able.
